Hell on wheels: 10 impressive photos about the terrible New York subway of the 70-80s

In the late 70s and early 80s, the New York metro system was one of the most dangerous places for life in an American metropolis. If you did not happen to see the New York subway of that time with your own eyes, you can rejoice at this fact. But the Swiss photographer Willy Spiller went there to make this surprisingly gloomy and atmospheric series of photos, which over time was called "Hell on Wheels."

In these striking shots, Spiller witnessed the birth of rap music and graffiti culture. However, the photographer witnessed a surge of crime, most of which lived and breathed in the underground part of the city. The number of incidents was so great that 2,300 police officers were assigned to patrol the subway. What can I say? The Swiss probably needed a lot of courage to take a chance and document what he saw.
