Where is the island

The island is located in the Caribbean and belongs to the state of Belize, bordering Mexico.

The island is 40 kilometers long and less than two wide (1 kilometer 600 meters). Just imagine, these two kilometers can be easily crossed with a walking step, reaching from one coast to another.

What a strange name

Ambergris-Kaye got its name because gray ambergris was often found on its shores. This wax-like substance is actively used in perfumery (hence the fact that amber perfumes are popular in the 19th century). It allows you to fix the aroma. Ambergris is formed in the digestive tract of sperm whales. This is a fairly valuable product, which is still used today to create perfumes. Especially Arab perfumers prefer it, although synthetic analogues have long been created.

Beautiful coral reef

The coastline of Ambergris-Kaye is protected by coral reefs, the length of which is 306 kilometers.

This is the largest chain in the Western Hemisphere, and the second longest in the whole world (in the first place is Australia's Great Barrier Reef). There is a great variety of tropical fish and fancy corals, so diving here just must be included in the recreation program.

Big blue hole

Another attraction of the island is the Big Blue Hole. The perfectly round limestone funnel has a diameter of 305 meters and a depth of 122 meters. According to the famous researcher Jacques-Yves Cousteau, this is one of the best places for diving.

The hole is popular among recreational diving enthusiasts. In it you can find a variety of animals: nanny sharks, giant groupers, reef sharks and other inhabitants of the aquatic world.

For lovers of antiquities

Ambergris Caye also has interesting places for history buffs. On the territory of the island there are ancient buildings of the Mayan civilization, as well as limestone caves, where the Indians performed religious rituals. Many archaeological artifacts were discovered in them.

In addition, the island remembers the days of pirates and immigrants from Mexico who fled during the period of caste wars. It is the descendants of the latter that make up the majority of the island's population.

And of course, for fans of good beaches, this island is also magnificent: classic white sand, spreading palm trees and dense mangrove forests.

The island is mainly moved on foot or by golf carts.

Another interesting place on the island is the Khol Chan marine reserve.

It is located in the south of Ambergris Cayeux and is one of the first marine reserves in Central America. Immersion depth in some parts of the park is up to 30 meters. Under the water you can see the whole coral mountains with ferns and anemones.
