Are there earthquakes on the moon?

How similar is the moon to the earth, and can earthquakes occur there? More specifically, the manifestations of seismic activity in our closest neighbor are called moonquakes, and they really happen there. On the moon, just like ours, signs of geological processes are manifested, which means that our satellite is not so cold and lifeless celestial body as it might seem at first glance.

But not all surface shocks on the moon are caused by geological activity in the bowels of the satellite. Some of them are associated with the fall of meteorites to the surface, as well as with the proximity of the Earth and the Sun. It is our planet, as the nearest large cosmic body, that has a significant impact on the geological state of the Moon, causing deep tidal earthquakes that coincide with the phases of rotation of our satellite.

Compared to the Earth, the internal geological processes on the Moon are less intense, but they are still present. The maximum magnitude recorded by the devices was 5.5. And tectonic moonquakes are the most unpredictable and dangerous for the future lunar station, the opening of which is planned for the next decade. In this regard, astrophysicists intend in the near future to place additional seismographs on the moon, which will determine the most active areas on the surface of our satellite, and, based on this, adjust the placement of the future lunar base.
