Egyptian miracle: how in Egypt more than 200 hectares of forest were grown in the middle of the desert

Serapium is a truly innovative project, the result of cooperation between Egyptian and German scientists, which allows you to no longer rely on rain or water supplies, but to use an adapted wastewater system for irrigation. They provide not only moisture, but also the necessary nutrients (which significantly helps the growth of plants), and in fact are already fertilizers.

Despite the fact that the wastewater used in irrigation undergoes certain treatment, this method of irrigation can only be used for growing trees and plants that are not intended for human consumption. This kind of alternative seems perfectly ideal: from the nearest wastewater treatment plant, moisture flows through pipes and hoses covering hundreds of hectares of sand directly into the forest.

According to the creators of the desert woodland planting project, trees in Serapium grow 4 times faster than, for example, in Germany. And if you use 80 percent of Egypt’s wastewater, then about 650 thousand hectares of the local desert could be planted with forests.
