Valley of the Mills - abandoned mills at the bottom of a gorge in Italy

When about 35,000 years ago, as a result of volcanic eruptions in the area of the modern Cape Sorrento (Italy), deep clefts formed, stormy streams of water rushed through them, gradually making their way to the sea. The resulting water channels attracted the attention of people, so that their shores began to rapidly grow into settlements.

Rapid flows of people quickly found application and began to use them to rotate mills. So a whole group of these hydraulic structures appeared, which provided people with flour until the beginning of the 20th century. Subsequently, however, the construction of large pasta factories in nearby cities made the mills no longer needed.

Today, an amazing place with many old mills has been transformed beyond recognition and is more like frames from a post-apocalyptic film. The valley at the bottom of the deep Italian crevice was called Valley of the Mills, and at the same time, it was the status of one of Sorrento’s most stunning sights, visited by thousands of tourists every year.
