Lake Vivi: where is the geographical center of Russia

In the center of the Putorana plateau, in the middle of the vastly untouched expanses of the Siberian taiga, there is a beautiful lake Vivi. Here, crystal clear water, amazing air, an abundance of fish and wild animals. This reservoir differs from all other similar lakes of Putorana in that the geographical center of Russia is located on its shore.

The new geographical center of our country was calculated after the collapse of the USSR, when the borders of the state changed and the former center became irrelevant. The modern center turned out to be on the southeastern shore of Lake Vivi and has coordinates 66 ° 25 'north latitude and 94 ° 15' east longitude.

The lake is located in the Evenki region of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. This is a freshwater pond that has a narrow elongated shape, which is associated with its rift origin. Lake Vivi has a width of no more than 3-5 kilometers, and its length is over 80 kilometers. For all its geographic significance for the country, the lake is poorly understood, and it is still not clear exactly what its depth is. Given its origin, scientists suggest that this value varies between 80-200 meters. Many rivers and streams flow into the lake, and the large Vivi River flows out.

Lake Vivi and the river of the same name are very rich in fish. Along with the usual perch and pike, grayling, taimen, and whitefish live here. This attracts many fishermen here in the summer season. But tourists are not uncommon here: experienced hikers and climbers of mountain passes regularly visit this beautiful area of the Putorana Plateau. Fishermen get to the lake mainly by helicopters or climbing up the Vivi River from the place where it flows into the Lower Tunguska River.

On the occasion of the unique geographical status of the lake, there is a memorial sign in the form of a monument 7 meters high on its shore. Despite the fact that after the entry of Crimea into Russia, the coordinates of the geographical center of the country shifted slightly, it is still located in the area of Lake Vivi.
