Eye of Quebec: an unusual lake of Canada, formed as a result of a meteorite impact

It is no coincidence that Canada is called the country of lakes, because there are so many of them that even scientists are at a loss to give an exact figure. One of the most interesting, in our opinion, is Lake Manicoagan, which is also called the Eye of Quebec. This pond is round in shape and owes its appearance to a meteorite that once fell in this place of North America.

Manicoagan Lake is located in eastern Canada, in the central part of Quebec. The peculiarity of the lake lies in the fact that inside it is the island of Rene-Levasser, which repeats the shape of the lake and only slightly inferior to it in diameter. Thus, the lake itself is not round, but has the shape of a ring, whose area is 1942 square meters. km From space, the lake looks most impressive: you can see all that beauty of nature, which cannot be seen standing on the shore. Moreover, the reservoir is clearly visible in satellite images both in summer and in winter. Impressed by what he saw, the astronauts gave him a second name - the Eye of Quebec.

Interestingly, the basin of the lake has a meteorite origin. According to scientists, at the time of impact on the surface of the Earth, the diameter of an alien body was about 5 kilometers. Although its original size, before it partially burned out in the atmosphere, could be much larger and most likely reached 100 kilometers. It is estimated that a meteorite fell in this part of the planet more than 200 million years ago.

Not today, Manikuagan Lake is a reservoir. Back in the 1960s, several dams were built on the outflowing river, thanks to which the lake level rose. The energy generated by hydroelectric power plants is enough to provide residents of nearby settlements and even for sale in the USA.
