The last nomads: Raute - a primitive tribe living in the mountains of Nepal

There are still people on our planet who lead the same way of life as their ancestors thousands of years ago: they live by gathering and hunting. One of these peoples is the Raut, a tribe that lives in the mountains of Nepal. Today there are no more than 150 of them, and this tribe is likely to disappear in the coming decades. But while there is a chance to get to know them, which was done by photographer Andrew Newey.

Of course, the routs do not live in loincloths and caves, but their life is very primitive. They exchange textiles with farmers; he serves them with clothes and a house.

Raute are nomads, so every few weeks they gather their camp and move through the forest and mountains.

These people live in small camps deep in the forest. Simple tents, which are made of twigs, leaves and a piece of cloth, serve as their home.

Traditionally, at work, labor is divided into male and female. Women cook, collect water, tubers, fruits, and do the cleaning.

Men are hunting. And this is the elder of the tribe, he just killed a monkey and carries the booty to the camp.

Everyone has a job: girls chop corn, and younger children help with harvesting.

An entire tribe usually gathers around the fire. Raute is very suspicious of strangers, the government has long wanted to evict them from the forests.

This nomadic people is not engaged in agriculture, according to their beliefs, sowing grain is a sin. So their main diet is berries and plants collected in the forest, as well as monkey meat, which was obtained by men.

Trees are also chopped down, but they are very rare among rare specimens, so only common trees are cut down.

The children at the route are very independent, but they do not go far into the forest alone, fearing the attack of the bears.

In total in Nepal there are more than 650 people of the Route tribe, but in the wild only a small part remains, the rest came to civilization. The main reason is habitat loss. Rautes live along with animals in the forests, and forests are constantly cut down, so the nomads had to make contact with other people.
