Drvengrad (Kustendorf) is a city in Serbia that Kusturica built

Not far from Kamengrad, but already on the Serbian side, is the fruit of an inexorable fantasy and the first creation of Emir Kusturica - Drvengrad (Wooden City). It was a dream of an ideal village of his childhood with wooden houses, churches and awkward streets, which recreates the traditional flavor of Serbia.

Drvengrad, Mokra Gora, Mechavnik, Kustendorf, or Kusturica Village - all these are the names of the same place. Kusturica began to build his ethnic village in the 2000s, when he shot the film “Life as a Miracle,” but instead of dismantling the scenery after filming, he decided to continue construction. So at this place a few dozen picturesque houses grew.

The place here is picturesque in itself, a mountainside.

Therefore, from any point of the village offers stunning views.

Entrance to the village is paid, but also inexpensive, only 2.1 euros, but payment only in cash. You can pay in euros, in Bosnian or Serbian currency. The problem was that we all spent the euro, we tried to pay the Bosnian to the border, because we thought that they would no longer be useful, and the Serbs had not yet been named. They didn’t accept cards, there was no exchanger, and the nearest ATM was 15 kilometers away, this is tourism development. Climbing his pockets, they scrubbed money for only two tickets, the rest had to wait behind a wooden fence.

The village is small, one main street and several small side streets, it is impossible to get lost here, but if anything, here is a map :)

The first thing that you most likely will notice is the smell, the smell of sleepers. It is from the sleepers that all the streets and stairs of the village are made.

Here you can see a collection of retro cars.

Among them is the "lit up" in the films of Kusturica the old "Trabant".

This is a full-fledged settlement in which there are hotels, restaurants, a cinema, a church and even a prison.

Emir Kusturica himself lives here between the tours and the filming of new films. We were not lucky, the owner was not at home.

The streets of the village are named after people whom Kusturica considers worthy personalities.

By the way, get ready to have a great run up the stairs.

For lovers of souvenirs - magnets and not only - there are several shops. Payment is also only "online cache".

In general, the village left a pretty good impression, if it were not for the friends who remained behind the fence, one could spend more time here exploring each house.

As for the prison, George W. Bush and Javier Solana wind up their term here. They came here for endorsing the intervention of NATO and the United States in the Kosovo conflict.

If you suddenly get hungry, there is an excellent cafe, prices are not higher than in Belgrade.
