A Time of Great Stories: Hitchhiking in Foreign Countries

Today I’ll tell several stories about my hitchhiking in different countries, but by the phrase “my hitchhiking” I now mean not how someone drove me, but on the contrary, I mean someone. Next in line are stories from Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey, the main characters: a middle-aged German, young girls from Russia and a married couple from Libya.

Greek island of Crete and a lonely German

For me, a trip to the island of Crete is one of the key in my "career" as a tourist-traveler. Here, for the first time, we had planned our vacation on our own; here, for the first time, travel routes were thought out; here, a car was first taken for hire.
So, we drive along the south of the island by a rental car, there are three of us, I’m driving, we drive through some beautiful gorges, here I see a lonely standing and voting man on the road.

- Well, maybe we'll pick it up? I ask my friends.

- Oh well, its in figs, - replies a friend.

His girlfriend, who is now a wife, also doubts. And I take and just stop.

- Hello! I greeted him.

- Hello!

The level of English was rather weak (to say the least, it’s perfect now, haha), but we managed to find out where it needed to be. The man turned out to be a German who walked with a large backpack for several kilometers. What he did there alone is not clear. Nobody picked him up, so he was very grateful to us. We had a nice chat, discussed Greece and interesting places of Crete, drove the man to the fork in the road he needed, wished each other a good rest and said goodbye.

It was a small but fun experience. We practiced our English skills, crossed the line of our embarrassment and helped a person, everyone was satisfied.

Bulgaria and two girlfriends from Russia

The next case of "haulage" occurred in Bulgaria. My friend and I were traveling from one coastal city to another. At the bus stop we noticed two girls, stop.

- Hello, girls, where are you going?

- To Golden Sands.

- Great, we are on the way. Sit down, give a ride!

One girl was clearly bolder, and by the second it was clear that she was worried, she obviously did not really want to go somewhere with two unknown guys, but still sat down. There was a friend behind the wheel, and it should be noted that he has the habit of blocking the doors in the car while driving. So, only the girls sit in the back seat, when you hear the characteristic “Click” ... The one that was initially worried, kept her eyes even stronger, her eyes flashed, she looked expressively at her friend, nodded her head.

“We'll probably go ...” says one of them.

- What is it?

- We will wait for the bus, they seem to go often ...

I realized that the girls were very worried, so I turned on the charisma, smiled and said something like “don’t worry, we’re not maniacs, just a friend has a habit of blocking doors, don’t worry.” The ice was melted. As a result, we chatted sweetly all the way, the girls turned out to be girlfriends from Russia (like from Moscow). In Golden Sands, we still bathed together, after which we said goodbye and left in different directions. Again, they helped people and talked with pretty girls, what's bad?

Turkey and a couple from Libya, the homeland of Muammar Gaddafi

These are simple stories. What can I say? I really like to drive someone while traveling to other countries. If I was driving alone, I would hardly have done it, of course, but when you are traveling with a company, there is no fear left, you get only new impressions and put the pluses in your karma. Do you pick up voters on the road while traveling? If there are any interesting stories related to this, tell me it will be interesting to read.
