Rio Secreto: Mayan Sacred River that shakes with its beauty

On the Yucatan Peninsula, in the part that belongs to Mexico, there are many karst caves. But in recent years, a recently opened cave called Rio Secreto, which we will talk about today, has become especially popular with tourists.

Rio Secreto Cave is located near the tourist town of Playa del Carmen. It was discovered by chance and so impressed scientists with its beauty that it was decided to open it for tourists and divers, which was done in 2007. The territory entered a tourist underground park called Rio secreto.

An underground river flows inside the cave, and the name of the cave translates from Spanish as "secret river". It is believed that the Mayans were aware of the existence of this river, and they considered it sacred. For this reason, or for the sake of tourist surroundings, before going to the cave, all travelers should receive the blessing of an Indian shaman.

Researchers managed to find out that the length of the underground river flowing in the grottoes of the cave is 15 kilometers. But for visiting by tourists at the moment only 600 meters of this amazing dungeon are available. Travelers are attracted by numerous stalactites and stalagmites, as well as surprisingly clear water. There are even small fish and crustaceans in the river, which can be observed while traveling through the cave.

The water of the underground river is rich in valuable minerals, so it is used for the manufacture of cosmetics. For this reason, before visiting the cave, tourists must necessarily take a shower, wear special wetsuits and shoes. You can explore the beauty of the cave by swimming or on small rafts. Picturesque grottoes and corridors do not leave anyone indifferent. Tourists are also given helmets with flashlights, since most of the halls do not penetrate natural light from the surface.
