Rosario

Rosario is a city in the province of Santa Fe in Argentina.

About city

Argentina's third largest city, Rosario is the home of more than a million people. In this port city, you can watch an eclectic mix of street performers, activists, artists, and party people.

You can book hotels in Rosario on booking, and check if there is a better price somewhere, here. An alternative is to rent housing from private owners. Such offers can be searched, say, here.

How to get there

By plane

There are daily flights (50 min.) From Buenos Aires Aeroparque Airport and Ezeiza Airport (but still a more convenient way to get into the city is to rent a transport at EZE Airport and go on a four-hour trip). If you still choose the option of air travel - tickets can be found here.

By train

As of May 2015, this method is still slightly cheaper than the bus option. A train from the Retiro station in Buenos Aires to Rosario costs between 175 and 225 Argentine pesos ($ 14-18 in US dollars), while bus tickets cost about 250 Argentine pesos ($ 20). But you should also take into account the fact that buses run about twice as fast, so when choosing a transportation option, you need to calculate what will be more profitable.

Also be aware that you should not pay attention to rumors alleging problems with buying tickets. This is actually not the case. You can easily buy tickets at the station right before departure.

Trains run once a day in each direction. For a more accurate timetable, as well as possible repairs to the line and its closure, visit the Trenes Argentinos website.

There are two classes of travel on the train: Primera - with individual seats, and Pullman - more expensive and also includes air conditioning.

Often there are trains to and from Buenos Aires, but keep in mind that the trip takes at least 7 hours and the condition of the rails is not very good. In cars, it shakes, shakes, chatters and there is even a part of the way where you can fly up from the shaking in its place and hit substantially. The cars themselves also leave much to be desired. They are 60s release (or even earlier) and are in poor condition. They have no air conditioning and very poor ventilation: only 3 small windows for the entire car (unless, of course, you can get to them in order to open). Therefore, the train often becomes very hot and stuffy, and many people begin to undress.

Sometimes small merchants travel by train selling ice cream or fruit and there is no other way to buy food or water during the journey.

It is difficult to see anything through the windows because of the huge number of horizontal scratches left from the branches that touched them during movement, as well as from cracks formed as a result of stones thrown by children or teenagers.

Thus, taking into account all the above, a trip on a local train can be interesting only if you are ready to look at it as an adventure and a special unique experience. Imagine: you ride a terrible train on rails that are overgrown with weeds and seem to have been abandoned many years ago, while your path passes through deserted train stations, turning into ruins, and dying railway cities with rotting plants ... This journey will be like railway tour of ghost towns.

By bus

Bus is the most convenient way to travel in Argentina. There are many buses departing daily from the bus station of Rosario in almost every city in the country. You can also travel by bus to southern Brazil, Chile, Peru and Bolivia. The EGA bus line runs the daily bus in Montevideo, departing at 23:50 and arriving in Montevideo at 8:30 the next morning. It costs 286 pesos (August 2013).

By car

Two motorways connect Rosario with Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Cordoba (since 2011), although there are some locals who travel by bus, remise (private taxi service) or use one of the many taxi roaming zones.

Things to do

Rosario is full of things interesting for both tourists and locals! In any case, you will find a wide selection of bars and restaurants with amazing views of Parana! Please note that the water is quite muddy, so do not expect to swim well.

Rosario is also known for its nightlife, which starts around 2am (if you're lucky) and ends when the sun rises. The city has a wide variety of nightclubs and discos where you can dance all night long!

Rosario is also known as the salsa capital of Argentina. Wednesdays and Sundays are the most popular days at Willie Dixon's, the local salsa club.

Shopping and shops

Many of the products offered at el centro (the central retail area of Rosario) are very similar to those found in any other shopping center. Goods that might interest tourists are leather bags, wallets, belts and accessories. A must-see for shopping in the area is Raices, where travelers can pick up a handbag or other interesting things.

Also note that, despite the difference in the value of the currency, clothes, shoes, bags, and similar items are not much cheaper than in the neighboring United States. Therefore, if you want to successfully buy, then buy things not in stores, but from street vendors and artisans standing around El Centro and the park surrounding the Argentine Flag Monument.

Please note that Argentina has two currency exchange rates: “official” and “blue”. As of May 2015, travelers exchanging their money on the blue market receive 40% more pesos for every dollar. All banks and ATMs must use the official exchange rate, so exchange currency at a local exchanger or at Calla Floyd in Buenos Aires. You can also try to negotiate with sellers to pay for their goods in US dollars.
