New Athos

A trip to the Black Sea in the small Abkhaz resort town of New Athos, in my opinion, is comparable to a trip to a fairy tale.

Only in a fairy tale you can meet so many miracles at once! Here, like Ali Babu, the mysterious cave in Iversky mountain, one of the largest known in the world today. The first time I visited it was in childhood, back in 1982, but vivid memories are still alive. An excursion to the underworld, I am sure, will delight both children and adults who have encountered the miracle of nature.

The New Athos Simone-Kananitsky monastery, which gave the modern name to the Abkhazian town, will give a spiritual tone to the journey. It is worth visiting the grotto in which, according to legend, the Apostle Simon Zilot was praying. I often heard stories about miracles that still occur today by faith turning to the help of this saint.

How to get into this amazing region of the northern subtropics?

Modern Abkhazia as a state is recognized only by Russia, Venezuela, Nicargua and Nauru (UN member states), it is governed by the government of the Republic of Abkhazia. It is located in the northwestern part of the southern slope of the Main Caucasian Range on the northeastern shore of the Black Sea.

But regardless of whether the political world recognizes or ignores its borders, it is, and we will have to cross it.

I will tell you in detail about this and about what goods can (cannot) be transported through customs. I advise you to pay attention to the information so that your vacation is not overshadowed by random perplexities.

By plane

Today to Abkhazia itself due to international restrictions by direct flight you do not reach. Although there are airports on its territory: the civilian "Babushara" in Sukhumi and the military "Bamboura" near Gudauta.

My childhood memories contain a comical incident: while boarding a plane at the Babushara airport, we all saw with amazement how a hefty pig with a wooden yoke around his neck was quietly walking along our runway. Yes, the attitude towards animals in Abkhazia is akin to Indian. Here you and the cows on the tracks, and the pigs on the runways.

I am sad that this airport, which was the first to receive the heavy IL-86 in Transcaucasia in 1986, still does not have the ability to function.

But I hope that soon the airports of sunny Abkhazia will again begin to receive happy tourists.

By train

I love trains! With the departure of the train from the platform, the rush of everyday life dissolves. A train ride is an adventure in itself! you can enjoy the change of nature from the middle strip to the northern subtropics, chat with fellow travelers. No wonder the most sincere conversations happen precisely in the cars, and not at a reception at the psychoanalyst.

Now, however, traveling in this way is complicated for those who are accustomed to a cigarette. But we are with you for a healthy lifestyle!

From southern Russia to New Athos can be reached by train Adler-Sukhum. The schedule is not stable, therefore consult with the North Caucasian Suburban Passenger Company 8-928-127-95-25 in advance. The cost of tickets is from 150 rubles. Border control is carried out in the car.

Can todrop direct ticket to the Moscow-Sukhum train on the way 45 hours; St. Petersburg-Sukhum (goes through Moscow) - 55 hours on my way. Attention! At the station New Athos stop just 1 minute! Get ready! The train is not a minibus, it will not wait for our fees.

Ticket prices are lower than for trains to Sochi. The wagons of Sukhumi trains are not always new, and it is not the duty of the cashier to notify you of the technical condition of your train. Here it’s how lucky. But, for travelers traveling south with children and also with pets, in my opinion, getting to New Athos by train is a very reasonable and safe option.

By bus

Yes, you can also get to Abkhazia by bus. Direct flights from Moscow and St. Petersburg there are not carried out. You can only get with transfers. You’ll have to drag and drop luggage, transfer children, and so on.

From Moscow By bus you can get to Krasnodar or Sochi, and from there to Sukhum. The length of the route is 1,760 km. From St. Petersburg the route will pass through Stavropol and Adler (with transfers in these cities). In Adler, there will also be a transfer at the border crossing. Tabout there is a border-crossing, when you follow the bus, in any case, do it on foot. On the way, you will have to spend 3 days 13 hours under favorable circumstances. This method does not suit me: swollen legs and a sore back are not for me.

As for following the bus from Sochi, then resting on the Black Sea coast of Russia, you can go to the Abkhaz New Athos for a one-day excursion.

Crossing borders with a cultural program will no longer be your headache. You can buy this tour from any of the operators waiting for you on the embankments and streets of Sochi, Hosta and Adler.

In Abkhazia itself, there is also a bus service between the cities. But do not expect comfort here. For the most part, the fleet is equipped with old Icarus. There are also minibuses plying between the cities of Abkhazia.

By car

For me, this method is the most desirable! After all, there is nothing more interesting in the world than traveling in your own car when you are not dependent on schedules or on the availability of tickets. Nearby are close people and your favorite dog, and outside the windows - freedom for the eyes and desires of the traveler! Our road to Abkhazia by car took 42 hours from St. Petersburg to Gagra, where we stayed traveling all over Abkhazia and often visiting New Athos.

We reached the border with Abkhazia, which operates around the clock and runs along the Psou River, as follows:

Having arrived from St. Petersburg to Moscow, we reached the M4 highway - to Dzhubga, from Dzhubga to the checkpoint, which is located on the river. Psou, walked along the M27, twisted on the Sochi serpentine. We even liked it. With gas stations, cafes and road surfaces, everything was fine. Traffic cops did not commit atrocities, but we did not violate traffic rules. We didn’t get into special traffic jams either. In a word, we went through the route quite successfully. But we had 2 drivers per machine! If in your case there will be only one driver, be sure to take care of the rest on the way! Related roadside hotels you will meet a lot. You can stop somewhere (in the same Dzhubga) with a tent by the sea. Do not save travel time on vacation for the driver!

After crossing the border to New Athos is within easy reach! Follow the same M27, which will now go to Sukhumi highway. Psou - Gagra - Pitsunda - Gudauta. Next will be New Athos. All inscriptions on signs are duplicated in Russian. The road is quite decent. Serpentine will begin after the New Athos. Consider this fact, if you want to then ride to Sukhum.

You can be surprised and puzzled by herds of cows or goats and flocks of sheep walking on it. It’s worth it just to be patient.

Do not break the rules yourself, for traffic cops are also ubiquitous severe guys in this region. By ferry

In the holiday season from late May to early autumn from Sochi you can get to the Abkhazian city of Gagra by motor boat, from where it is easy to get to New Athos by public transport.

A Russian passport is enough to purchase a ticket. On a Sochi-1 catamaran boat, your journey will take about 1.5 hours. Tickets are about 500 rubles. Children under seven years of age are transported free of charge.

The sun in St. Petersburg is rather sparingly affectionate and, especially, in the heat. Therefore, my family and I always try to escape this summer. If you also prefer bronze tan, warm sea waves, light clothing and the smell of burnt hair, then summer is definitely the best time!

Although in Abkhazia, as anywhere in the world, a true traveler will meet his discoveries and gifts of fate at any time of the year.

The climate of Abkhazia is determined by its geographical location. The Black Sea coast, the Caucasus Mountains, which protect the valleys from the winds, have caused the formation of humid subtropics here. Summer in these places is generous in warmth, and winter is more like October-November of central Russia. Precipitation is evenly distributed over the seasons, and sunny days are clearly superior to relatively inclement weather.

Beach boom - from late June to August. In the velvet season, vacationers noticeably decrease, which is not surprising, since classes at schools and institutes begin. Prices are allocated accordingly. New Athos is the record holder for the number of fine days in Abkhazia. The heat here lasts longer than on the Russian coast of the Caucasus. In the fall, prices fall, but the weather does not interfere with acquaintance with culture and spiritual monuments.

With the phrase "New Athos in Winter", I immediately recall the Soviet film "Winter Evening in Gagra." Although the correct pronunciation is "in Gagra." But here it is not about the rules of declension, but whether it is worth spending this very evening (morning, afternoon) in New Athos next to Gagra?

Good news: winter prices follow my axiom "The sun is hotter - prices are higher! And vice versa". Housing is 2 times cheaper, my favorite tangerines are up to 30 rubles. per kg!

Central heating here is a rare occurrence (echoes of war), so when choosing a place of rest, pay attention to the presence of a fireplace or autonomous heating.

Winter is a time for excursions and health care. 7 km from New Athos, in the village of Primorskoye there is a hydrogen sulfide hospital, Ritsa has a source of mineral water Auadhara.

My pricing axiom "The sun is hotter - the prices are higher" is already known. Good news: even a summer vacation in New Athos is cheaper than in neighboring Pitsunda and Gagra, Sochi and Adler.

The reason is the minimalism of entertainment that we are accustomed to (clubs, bars, beach joys, sensations). Although historical, spiritual and natural wonders are abundant here.

The private sector is cheaper, but if you are not inclined to communicate with the owners (which is sincere and interesting), we choose a hotel, a boarding house.

room for two with 3 meals a day in a boarding house 700 meters from the sea: January - 2,000 rubles; July 2017 - 6,000, August - 5,000.

In the private sector A bed in summer can be rented for 300 rubles, although the estimated price of summer 2017 per person is 500 rubles. A bathroom and shower will be on the floor.

New Athos cave or Anacopian abyss, one of the largest in the world. Having descended by underground train to a depth of 160 m, you find yourself in a wonderland.

New Athos Simon-Kananitsky Monastery

The city owes its modern name to this particular Orthodox monastery, the unique architectural ensemble of which is executed in the New Byzantine style and is a masterpiece of Russian architecture of the 19th century.

Beaches. Which are better

Again good news! In New Athos, the first coastline is almost not built up, as is customary on the Black Sea coast in Russia, despite violations of the law. Therefore, long walks without fear of wandering into someone else’s possessions are provided for you.

The beaches are pebbled. Well, firstly, it is very useful for pampered feet of citizens. Walking barefoot on pebbles cures diseases such as spurs and flat feet. Secondly, pebbles are an excellent building material for castles and palaces. Your children will be busy with creativity! (Just look so that they do not play war games and give "volleys" to the neighbors). Thirdly, you do not need to visit expensive spas. Hot pebbles along the spine, and - nirvana!

Smaller pebble beaches are located in the center of the resort. In the eastern part, sand is even found. This is the "Turkish beach". The descent into the water is comfortable, the bottom is even. There are many breakwaters in New Athos, which humble the waves washing the bay. The beaches here are "less crowded" than in other resorts in Abkhazia.

The sea is clean. Entrance to all beaches is free. True, equipment (sun loungers and umbrellas) can be rented only on the beach areas of sanatoriums and boarding houses. There are showers right there, which is not in another beach area. Changing cabins are everywhere.

Churches and temples. Which are worth a visit

I think travelers should pay attention to the religious history of the places visited. Indeed, along with the geographical and economic and the prerequisites for the emergence of cities and states, it has its own sacred meaning. Abkhazia - the land of the soul - is associated with the name of one of the 12 apostles Simon Kananit, who served here and died at the hands of Roman pagans.

We will visit Saint Grotto, located on the territory of the Anacopia Reserve. We will walk along a rocky path along the bank of the Psyrtskhi river, bypass the footprint left on the stone by the apostle, and the place of his execution. Stone steps lead to the grotto. Before us is a cave consecrated by the New Athos monks, where they leave notes, candles, ask the saint for the prayer of intercession. Of course, when a crowd of excursionists come here as a crowd and, on the command of their guides, “actively” apply themselves to the icons, pushing you into the wall, it becomes awkward. But in seclusion, one can imagine how, once upon a time, a great ascetic prayed here, looking at the starry sky.

Since childhood, I have been subdued by these noble birds; at six I even wanted to have a small swan at home, but for some reason my parents did not share my enthusiasm. But now, the place of meeting with this beauty for me always remains special.

So it became Seaside New Athos Park, broken at the end of the XIX century. by the monks. Now it is located in the center of New Athos.

At the base is a seven-pond system with running water. The monks used these ponds for their needs, raising fish. Between the ponds were bridges in the form of arches. A park (architect Shervinsky, 1908) is spreading around the ponds today, the grand opening of which was in 1910 during the arrival of members of the royal family in New Athos.

Food. What to try

Abkhazians are not without reason famous for their longevity. The reason for this, I think, in addition to the crystal air and, of course, sanatorium natural conditions, is also that they eat. The Caucasus is famous for its hospitality, and where there is hospitality, there is a feast.

The local people here observe moderation in everything, and, unlike other peoples of the Caucasus, they do not often eat meat, preferring vegetable and sour-milk dishes, which they masterfully prepare. In New Athos, however, a curious incident occurred. Having learned that mamalyga is very popular here (thick porridge made from cornmeal with sour-milk cheese), we briskly ordered this dish to every eater from the company, in addition to everything else.

When they brought us four huge plates of porridge, it turned out that one serving was more than enough for everyone!

The interesting news for me was that “adjika” is a word of Abkhaz origin! They use little salt, replacing it with this burning "seasoning."

Children will enjoy the national sweets. So in New Athos you will be able to get acquainted with the healthy, vibrant and varied Abkhaz cuisine.

Where to taste it? There are many cafes in season. Prices are lower than in the popular resort of Gagra. In public catering at attractions, prices soar, although this can not be said about the level of service.

This directly disappointed us at Ritsa, but an inexpensive canteen at Swan Lake in the Seaside Park was very suitable. By the way, she works all season.

In New Athos, markets are not rich, it is better to visit Sukhum and Gagra.

Now about the proposed "attractions". In New Athos there is also such a form of leisure activities as "Jeeping", when you take a look at the local beauty and sights in the good old UAZ. And it will be the local dashing drivers who will drive them.

In addition, you can take a horse ride accompanied by (according to the promises of advertising) experienced instructors. There is no doubt that equestrian sport is very popular in Abkhazia. There are races even for the Cup of the President of Abkhazia.

According to the promises of the organizers of such excursions, even if you have never ridden, you will quickly master this type of tourism. But I want to warn you, do not rush to rush right away on a long horse journey! The male half of our team has a sad experience (though Crimean) in this regard, when after a long walk from the habit of riding in the saddle everything below the belt was desperately hurt.
